Tara Thompson
"the living organism, in a situation determined by the play of energy on the surface of the globe, ordinarily receives more energy than is necessary for maintaining life; the excess energy (wealth) can be used for the growth of a system (e.g., an organism); if the system can no longer grow, or if the excess cannot be completely absorbed in it's growth, it must necessarily be lost without profit; it must be spent, willingly or not, gloriously or catastrophically." —georges bataille

Interests
my main research interests lie at the intersection of mid-late 20th century french poststructuralism, media theory, and psychoanalysis. my strengths include deleuze and guattari, the transgression of georges bataille, the theory of individuation of gilbert simondon, and the media theories of niklas luhmann. passionate about the theoretical contributions of wilfred bion and the reintroduction of psychoanalytic concepts to popular discourse.
more specific interests include the theory of social transgression and its manifestation through new media outlets; who transgresses, who is punished for transgression, and what constitutes transgression. also interested in the theory of anime, manga, and otaku culture, and popular cultures more generally, as well as theories of gender and sexuality.
